SEMR Reading Program

SEMR Reading Program

Eighth graders will be engaging in a rich reading program with many opportunities for self-selection. The program requires that students always have a hard-copy book (no digital or e-books) of any genre. The book may be a graphic, fiction, non-fiction or historical text. Students will be expected to select texts of an appropriate challenge-level and to finish books within a two-week period. Students will earn points for completed texts on arbookfind.com. Each student based on his or her level will be given a point goal for the trimester. This will allow each student to read high-interest texts and to advance his or her skill by applying reading strategies, skills, and analysis while conferencing and regularly discussing texts with peers and teachers.

Nightly homework every night: students will read in their self-selected text in accordance with their reading plan. This should be a minimum of twenty to thirty minutes of reading in a quiet, distraction-free, electronics-free area. Students will then write a short, three-sentence response assigned and passed out in class. This homework does not change, though students may need to do additional studying or work depending on upcoming quizzes, make-up work, and use of class time.
